Femtocells have gone from isolated original equipment manufacturer devices to integrated end-to-end vendor solutions. They have also generated a huge amount of interest in the carrier community, and there are a slew of field trials in progress. If the economic and technical glitches currently delaying the commercial rollouts are sorted out, carriers would look to deploy them initially to reduce expenditure on expanding network infrastructures and later to generate revenue. The initial introduction could be a battle of wits in terms of pricing models; some of them have been addressed in this article. In the long run, the true value of femtocells can be unlocked through value-added services. While developing new services for the femtozone, it is important to ensure that they are not aimed at substituting existing home-based services, but at complementing them. This can be done by playing to the strengths of handheld devices-personal possessions!
