In their core business, fixed-network operators are subjected to enormous pressure from rivals, which means that profits are in sharp decline. The response to this trend lies in developing new broadband services such as triple play and converting to an IP/Ethernet-based network with flexible service platforms. At the same time, existing services with good sales should be continued as far as possible and the operating costs associated with them reduced. This is only possible if these traditional services are transferred to the new IP/Ethernet-based network, as this is the only way to avoid costly parallel operation of networks. An important feature here is the individual modification of migration to the exist-rning network infrastructure and to the services strategy of the fixed-network operator in question. In this case, particular focus is placed on the access network, as on the one hand traditional services will have to be migrated and on thernother hand the length of the access line will have to be reduced so that high bandwidths for the triple-play services or business customers' applications (e.g., LAN-to-LAN bridging, IP VPN) can be made available.
