4G All-IP Integration Architecture for Seamless Interworking between Heterogeneous Networks

摘要

Cellular (general packet radio service [GPRS] / third generation [3G]) and wireless local-area networks (WLANs) currently dominate wireless communication. Though cellular systems are the main wireless media, primarily for voice communication, it is now being enhanced for data services. Contemporarily, WLAN use has increased in the hotspot regions due to its high data rate and relatively low installation cost. So, integration of the two complementary systems is the focus for low-cost, high-data-rate multimedia communications. In this paper, we have proposed a novel integration architecture based on a three-level mobility management (TLMM) model for an all-Internet protocol (IP) wireless connectivity that also evaluates its inherent characteristics to control user mobility, handoff, authentication, billing issues, and more. Some well-known problems regarding handoff, such as ping-pong effect due to frequent user transitions across the network boundary and estimation of the network condition prior to handoff, are also considered.
