摘要

Soft handoff (SHO) is used in wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) systems because it could provide smoother transitions and enhance the communication quality. The handoff procedure is actually a kind of cell selection (CS) process. In this paper, downlink SHO performance for different CS schemes-namely, distance-based, perfect, and normal-are evaluated. Results show that the performance of the soft handoff depends closely on the CS scheme. With the distance-based CS, SHO gain is overestimated; with the ideal CS, SHO gain is underestimated.
