Multicast and broadcast service (MBS) in worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) has been defined, which will allow operators to provide high-bandwidth content, including streaming videos, to a large number of subscribers using the same over-the-air resources. For performance enhancement and high mobility support in these services across multiple base stations (BSs), specifications mandate synchronization of data transmission on air across the set of BSs characterized by an MBS zone. This paper suggests a shortcut approach for building the synchronization by reusing and building over the existing Layer 2 (L2) handoff procedures at the BS. The paper proposes identification and defining of an anchor MBS BS in an MBS zone. The anchor MBS BS shall process L3 multicast packets and, after classification and segmentation, tunnel the relevant L2 media access control (MAC) SDUs with synchronization information enhancements to all BSs in the MBS zone using type 2 bearer functions.
