The future of wireless / mobile rests very much with "personal broadband," and while it is important to discuss the pros and cons of the various technologies, a change in business models is what is really needed to move this market forward. In terms of developments, after years of waiting, the WiMAX standard was finally ratified in late 2005 and by early 2006 the first certified products had begun to arrive. LTE could be fully standardized and available by 2010, some three years later than initially envisioned. Having said this, while fixed operators around the world are currently testing WiMAX, many mobile operators are voting with their feet and employing HSPA.
