It is an indisputable fact that the worldwide adoption and growth of wireless, particularly mobile wireless, has been the fastest technological achievement in the history of mankind. In a span of 25 ye ars, moving from basic analog to high-speed digital while creating a worldwide industry worth half a trillion U.S. dollars1 is certainly an amazing feat. Clearly, it has not occurred in a vacuum, nor has it been a technological pipe dream of a committed engineering community: it has benefited a large portion of humanity. And therein lies its success-fulfilling a crucial human need to communicate. With these great advancements, we are upon an era known as the third generation of mobile wireless, or 3G. 3G has elevated the basic function of communication to information gathering and, to some extent, entertaining. It has achieved this by providing access to that other concurrent, amazing development we call the Internet, a catalyst for great social, political, and economic change of our time.
