摘要

Many mobile network generations have been defined and standardized in the past two decades. Each next-generation network (NGN) has had a very short life of a few years, and many are concern that many of the standards are being defined concurrently. Second generation (2G), which is already out of vogue in major advanced countries, is still being deployed in Third World countries. Third generation (3G) was expected to solve all the problems of the previous generations, but the persistent demand for higher rates and the non-compatibility of 3G standards has shifted the enthusiasm to beyond 3G (B3G) or fourth generation (4G) networks. This paper takes a critical view at the various generations of network standards along with impacting technologies with the intention of focusing on the mindset of the telecom planners and designers and raising their research consciousness.
