This volume of the Annual Review of Materials Research once again illustrates the exceptional scope of materials research today and the broad impact that materials have on society. As in recent volumes, this volume consists of both reviews devoted to a topical subject-in this case, materials advances for next-generation microelectronics-and reviews reflecting the diversity of materials research around the world.rnThe topical subject of materials advances for next-generation microelectronics, kindly organized by Drs. Tom Shaw of IBM Research and Roger French of DuPont, comes at a time when the semiconductor industry faces the prospect of redefining the materials and processes needed for the next-generation devices, as the technologies they have relied on for almost 40 years are reaching their limits. Dubbed "beyond CMOS" by some, the challenge is to extend the exponential increases in speed, memory, and capabilities that have taken place over the past 50 years.
