In the nearly 11 years since breaking ground deep in the New Mexico desert for construction of "the world's first purposely built commercial spaceport," the news on May 10, 2019, was long overdue, highly anticipated, and met with both skepticism and joy. Sir Richard Branson announced that his company Virgin Galactic was set to move operations from Mojave, California, to Spaceport America. "We are in the final countdown," Branson said. "Virgin Galactic is coming home to New Mexico, and it's coming home now."
