August is the peak month for hurricane activity. This year, at least one storm-and possibly two or three-are forecast to reach Category 3 (or higher) status. Category 3 storms pack sustained winds greater than 111 mph. There are some specific things that can be done to help minimize potential damage to aircraft. Consider the options presented in AOPA's online Answers for Pilots on hurricanes (www.aopa.org/members/ answers0809), which discusses everything from hurricane insurance to deflating the tires to impede the aircraft's movement.
