There's a big difference between currency and proficiency. Currency is what the regulations require to remain legal to fly; proficiency is what pilots require to remain confident. That's right. Confident, not competent. That's because your physical flying skills don't really diminish as quickly as you might think just because you're unable to fly a few times a month. It's your perception of how you'll fly that has the life of a chocolate bar at a Weight Watchers meeting. The good news is that, to a fair degree, you're not losing it if you're not using it, at least as far as flying is concerned. When I first began giving flight reviews to pilots who'd been away from flying for several years, I was surprised at how often they did quite well quite quickly. The average 200-hour pilot who hadn't flown in 10 years could easily put an airplane on the runway (instead of into it) on his first flight, without my intervention. Of course, these pilots often sounded as though they had hummingbirds in their shirt pockets, but that was just the sound of their flapping heart valves as a result of being nervous.
