Sometimes when managers start investigating issues related to rework and scrap on the shop floor, they discover the real root cause originates in administrative offices—before production gets the order. Take, for example, a printing company's forward-thinking leaders, who wanted to kill off one of their biggest profit drains, reprinting jobs. In print environments, reworking usually is impossible once the ink is laid down. Managers discovered at least 50 percent of reprints were traceable to issues in the front office. It was unclear, however, where exactly in the office the mistakes were originating.
