Bill, during his afternoon ritual, was checking e-mail messages from the suppliers he managed for his employer, TelequipCo Inc. Given the high-tech nature of TelequipCo's product lines, most of these vendors supply electronic components. Halfway through his messages, Bill finds the type of notification he fears but, unfortunately, has come to expect with increasing frequency. In 30 days, Capacitors-R-Us plans to discontinue all through-hole capacitors of one micro farad and less. The industry standard is 90 days notification, but much less notice frequently is given. Within one month's time, Bill needs to determine which of TelequipCo's products use these capacitors and how much demand TelequipCo can expect for the products over their remaining lives. These and other data enable Bill to make a recommendation to upper managers on how to mitigate this instance of part obsolescence.
