Last month we focused on the need to understand the three major components of a complete and effective metrics system: the metric or measurement, the activity, and the standard. We noted the importance of having the correct standard in place. Absolute standards are relatively rare and, consequently, are not particularly useful. Relative standards, on the other hand, can be broken down into three general categories: internal, group, and benchmark. This month we will look at the first two categories.
