My first meeting with Jack was in late 1966 when he and the Director of the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, Waldo. E. Johnson (Wally) treated me to a fine restaurant dinner while interviewing me for a position with the Institute. Our last conversation was in June 2007, shortly before his death. That first meeting was rather stressful for me, in part because Vallentyne made it clear that he expected 40 or more applications for every vacant position. In contrast, our final conversation was, despite his serious illness, a calming experience. I was talking to a happy warrior who was satisfied with the life that he had led and optimistic that his fellow humans would develop better ways of managing our individual and collective uses and abuses of the biosphere.
