In August 2008, the 8th INTECOL Wetland Conference was held in Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, Brazil, under the leadership of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT) and the Center of Pantanal Research (CPP) with the title: "Big Wetlands, Big Concerns". It was the first time that this important wetland event took place in South America. Approximately 1,000 scientists and students from all over the world attended the well organized meeting, which provided the participants with the opportunity not only to discuss the most diverse aspects of wetland ecology but also to visit the nearby Pantanal, one of the most famous wetlands in the world.
