Application of Essential Oils as Green Corrosion Inhibitors

摘要

This review reports the application of essential oils (EOs) as a green corrosion/biocorrosion inhibitor. The topics discussed are: (ⅰ) sources and composition of Eos, (ⅱ) adsorption mechanism, (ⅲ) anticorrosion effects of Eos on metal surfaces, (ⅳ) electrochemical investigations, (ⅴ) antimicrobial activity of Eos on corrosion-producing bacteria and algae, (ⅵ) synergetic effects of Eos, and (ⅶ) economical aspect and application of inhibitors. Various aspects of biofilms are discussed to identify microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) and the characterization of microorganisms causing MIC. The studies indicate that Eos have the potential as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors in both aggressive chemicals and biofilm environments.
