Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is being used today in a vast array of applications that impact building design and construction. Almost every part of a building, from the products that go into it, to the frame and skin of the building, have benefited from computer-aided manufacturing. The discussion here focuses on designing and manufacturing individual piece-parts such as castings that might, at the large end, support a heavy bridge structure or, at the smaller end, carry an individual glass panel. in its simplest form, CAM is a way for the machine operator to cause the cutting tool to follow a certain path in 2-D or 3-D. Similarly, in its simplest form, computer-aided design, or CAD, is just a way for a draughter to make a paper drawing. Taken alone, CAD or CAM can provide only relatively minor advances in productivity.
