In the past, this area used to be called as " Setagaya village", even though it was located in the middle of Tokyo City. When we began this project, wooden walls, traditional wooden gates and forests had still remained, creating traditional scenery. Facing this site, apartments designed by modern architects had also already existed. Thus, the site was only area where retained past remnants of the village. We tried to keep most of the trees in the site and set buildings between them with wooden structure scales. The first floor of three stories faced the street, and here we added horizontal roofs and small spaces where the residents can set up small shops or office like the old days. We tried to create some layers with the architecture and trees. Trough reoccurring layers of architecture and woods, the design becomes more "OKU", the Japanese traditional concept of space creating the deep and complex space.
