A coarsely-made brick toilet building stands beside Sigurd Lewerentz classical-style Chapel of the Resurrection (1925), in Woodland Cemetery, Stockholm, Sweden. Its proximity to the exquisitely refined, stone, chapel suggests that it has been placed there by someone with no sensibility to the stark differences between the two buildings. But, in fact, the architect of both buildings was Sigurd Lewerentz. They are the products of the same mind, although designed at different times - the smaller building benefitting from an additional half-century of Lewerentz' thinking. While the Chapel was Lewerentz brilliant interpretation of the inherited classical language of architecture, the language of the toilet building was his own.
