From paper to digital space: The geometry of construction at Gehry's Weisman Art Museum and Expansion

Digital technology has transformed building construction by introducing new approaches to construction sequence, information sharing, and the spatial orienting framework guiding the work. The Weisman Art Museum and expansion are built examples of this transformation. The former is a complex work of architecture that extended the boundaries of construction within the site built and sequential method of building shapes based on two-dimensionally expressed geometries. The expansion is a result of the digitally supported construction method that allows subcontracting firms to directly harness the geometric information that makes the complex shapes more reliable to construct. Computer software has transformed the documentation process by reducing the number of transitions from three-dimensional into two-dimensional information. It has improved collaboration between architects and subcontractors by allowing them a venue to build their components for design review. It has also made available a geometric system more suitable to describing and constructing complex spatial forms. Identifying the location of ruling lines allows shapes to be more economically supported with linear elements. Confirming the developability of a surface allows for sheet materials to be positioned in a regular pattern along a surface and provides a reasonable affirmation that the shape can be built without risk of unresolvable wrinkling. The reliability of the digital database allows for the direct fabrication of customised building components for incorporation into the onsite assembly. The overall impact of digital tools has placed architects directly in touch with the constructive geometry that resolves their design concepts into buildable form. This provides greater predictability in the final result and requires more direct collaboration before the fabrication process begins. In Gerhy's studio, the lessons learned over years of realising their designs into built form, has placed a new emphasis on craft analogies that have digital underpinnings. The material behaviour of'paper' surfaces is an analogy for tracking developability that eventually involves the computer to precisely confirm the twists and folds actually retain near zero Gaussian Curvature. Therefore, while direct material manipulation remains essential, digital tools have changed the design process by informing what is possible and establishing a new geometric rationale from which the studio works. This emphasis on digitally informed craft-making carries through from the initial model building into the digital scanning of the design. Once the digitised model is created, the confirmation model that is rebuilt comprises physical materials whose edges and profiles are cut based on digital outputs. Thus, model building begins to correlate with the eventual construction approach. It retains the essential haptic qualities of sculpting while introducing digitally defined and geometrically rationalised shapes that can be used for constructing the actual building.
