The new chancellery of the University of the Sunshine Coast is pivotal in consolidating the central precinct of the campus. While its form and detail defers to the library as the main centrepiece of the university, the Chancellery (directly opposite the library) forms a new campus hub and student activity area. The building includes the new Chancellery, 14 tutorial rooms, 40 academic offices, 600 square metres for student services, a 251-seat lecture theatre and a cafe with covered outdoor spaces connecting the various sections. Sustainability is key to the design. Offices and tutorial rooms operate with natural ventilation for the majority of the year, with rooms serviced by individual air-conditioning units for use during temperature extremes. Separate switching for each room delivers sizeable energy savings when rooms are not occupied. Corridors and stairwells are external and not air-conditioned.
