In December 2001, NSW experienced a series of destructive bushfires that involved loss of property. Many Sydneysiders will recall the devastation to nearby national parks and surrounding residential homes, despite astounding efforts by the local Rural Fire Service (RFS). The political response was the rapid introduction in August 2002 of new legislation with little consultation with the residential construction industry or associated professional bodies.The effects of the legislation are detailed in a publication produced by the RFS and planningNSW, Planning for Bushfire Protection 2001 (PBP 2001).
