From the time a person leaves secondary education to the time that person may register as an architect requires a minimum of seven years education.Typically five of those are provided in a tertiary institution and the remaining two within architectural practice or through the profession's education programs. In Australia and New Zealand the five-year period has, in the past, commenced with a three-year Bachelor-level degree, often a Bachelor of Design (Architecture), then been followed by a two-year Bachelor-level degree that is normally called a Bachelor of Architecture.
