In Australia, hospitals are a building typology that can be traced back to the foundations of the colony. Hospitals surrounded by extensive gardens of medicinal herbs were established early at Sydney Cove and on Norfolk Island.The first architect-designed building in Australia was a prefabricated hospital designed in England by Samuel Wyatt and erected in The Rocks in 1788. In 1810 a substantial pavilion hospital, known as the Rum Hospital after the method of payment to the contractors, was built fronting Macquarie Street. The two smaller side pavilions, with their distinctive wide verandahs survive today as the Mint and the NSW Parliament House. In the late 19th century, the substantial central block was demolished to make way for the multi-storey ward blocks of Sydney Hospital, which now overlook Martin Place.
