With a name taken from the synthetic benchmark for evaluating the performance of computers, Lockheed Martin's new Whetstone 'network in a box' was introduced at the AUSA exhibition to a group of journalists who, due to an interruption (not from Lockheed) in the session, were unfortunately unable to ask the plethora of questions that were bounding about in their heads. The Whetstone in question is a new Lockheed solution to the interoperability obstacle facing many operations today. The Whetstone communication gateway is based on the Internet Protocol to facilitate connectivity and is an offshoot from the original Soldier Level Integrated Communications Environment (Slice) technology from late-2002, and gives vehicle-mounted soldiers communications-on-the-move access to a multitude of networks through one integrated 'box'.
