Perfection aerial attack assets, whose aim is to reduce efficiency of surface ships' air defences by means of limiting the time spent inside their engagement zone, preconditions constant development of ship-borne surface-to-air (SAM) systems. Medium-range SAM systems represent one of the most important weapon against different types of aerial threats. A common feature of new—generation SAM systems is their enhanced firepower potential, which is ensured, first of all, through increasing their rate of fire and expanding their ammunition loads. This, in turn, requires development of lighter, smaller, vertically launched missiles.
