The most challenging day of my 34-year Army career was on April 7, 2003, during the Battle of Baghdad as a part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In what has come to be known as the Thunder Run," I served as the Battalion Commander of the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment. As a part of 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division, our mission was to seize three key intersections along High-way 8 in order to secure the primary line of communication into the city. Th rough the course of the day, we pushed forward and secured our three objectives (Larry, Moe, and Curley) but found ourselves black on almost every class of supply and still in a 360 degree fight. Towards die later part of the afternoon, our need to resupply, particularly ammunition, had become singularly critical.
