Iron tip soldering was already performed in the Meiji era in Japan (1868 to 1912). Back then, burning iron tip soldering was the mainstream, and it was in the 1920s when radio broadcasting started that electric soldering irons replaced burning soldering irons. Soldering irons with temperature control functions, which are taken for granted today, were put to practical use in the 1960s when printed circuit boards (PCBs) and transistors were invented. Transistors are vulnerable to heat, and it was around this time that the importance of iron tip temperature control began to be recognized.
