A new millennium has just dawned and the market for satellite communications in the Asia-Pacific region is undergoing unprecedented transformations. Giovanni Verlini, Editor of Asia-Pacific Satellite, explores the economic forces and the technological innovations which are destined to shape the future of the satellite sector. Telecom 99, the exhibition and conference organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) which was held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 10-17 October 1999 (see the article "A window on the future", Asia-Pacific Satellite December 1999, pg 29-32), was a rare opportunity to see, or at least get a feel for, those forces and trends which are currently shaping the telecommunications sector. The exhibition was an invaluable showcase for an industry which, at the beginning of the third millennium, is undergoing unprecedented transformation at an ever increasing speed.
