The way in which we communicate is changing rapidly from voice-based, one-to-one communications to a visual, multimedia environment where the major need is for a broadcast, one-to-many or many-to-many mode of operation to be supported. Emerging applications, such as desktop conferencing, corporate broadcasts and the development of Internet as a major network, has meant that there is a growing demand for broadcast applications using Internet Protocol (IP) for both terrestrial and satellite networks.
