摘要

Mark Williamson, independent space technology consultant and technical author, reviews the most significant developments in the space industry at the turn of the new century. The space industry, comprising satellite manufacturers, launch providers and satellite operators, is a peculiar animal. It grew from a long-established aircraft industry in response to the 'race for space' of the late 1950s, when most of the world's major aerospace companies formed specialised space divisions to produce rockets and/or satellites of various types. They instituted a civilian programme partly to share in the technological revolution of space development, and partly to detract from parallel developments in military technology which could not be publicised. Space was a convenient 'shop window' for their capabilities.
