Naval Radars: Seeking the Target Between the Clutter

Littoral environments are very complex given the high density of natural and man-made clutter (such as localised precipitation, wind farms and flocks of birds), crowded commercial air and sea-lanes, vehicle traffic along the coastline, and the effects of anomalous propagation on sensor performance. To further complicate the problem, recent years have seen the emergence of an increasingly "asymmetric" threat (including, inter alia, unmanned air vehicles, "go-fast" vessels, fast inshore attack craft, gliders, dinghies, swimmers and mines) that is intrinsically difficult to detect in high clutter backgrounds. Modern naval radars have to be designed with the challenges of operating in various naval environments, including in the extreme littorals, in mind. So much so, even modern ships are usually equipped with more than one radar systems, operating in different band. Here, ADJ takes a look at some of the most modern naval radar systems on offer today.
