Weapon systems and equipment for Special Forces has progressed throughout the years since the inception of such units. The helmet, body armour, rations, detection and targeting aids and the weapon systems including the ammunition, contributes to around more than half of the trooper's requirement. Just recently, the US Army selected General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, Textron Systems and Sig Sauer Inc for the final phase of the NGSW effort-one of the service's top modernisation priorities to replace the 5.56mm M4A1 carbine and the M249 squad automatic weapon in infantry and other close-combat units. NATO has defined special operations as "military activities conducted by specially designated, organised, trained, and equipped forces, manned with selected personnel, using unconventional tactics, techniques, and modes of employment". These special troops have to operate in the mountains, in the middle of the desert, deep in the jungle or in rough seas. However, some units such as grenadiers, sappers and troops equipped with smart weapons such as highly mobile multi-purpose unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) are seen by some to be trained and deemed as Special Forces. Here we look at some of the innovations and updates in weapon systems and equipment for Special Forces announced this year.
