It's four o'clock in the afternoon, and all of a sudden, the bank's computer systems go haywire and shut down completely. IT teams scramble in the back room, only to find that somebody or something from outside has bombarded the bank's systems with billions of bytes per second of garbage data input-way more than the bank's servers can handle. It's the classic signature of a denial-of-service attack. IT teams are joined by security teams who struggle to clear the clutter and plug the weak spots that the attackers target. Unnoticed in all this: a single wire transfer of hundreds of thousands of dollars from a heretofore dormant account-that otherwise would have been tagged as suspicious-sneaks through. It's an all-too-real scenario these days.
