Excerpted from "Finding a peach of a bank in Fruita, Colo.," a recent installment in the travels of retired banking couple Larry and Mary Ann Marik. Alpine Bank has served the Western Slope for 37 years, and coincidentally, has 37 locations.The branch we visited was built in 2006 to serve people in Fruita, population 11,536. When we walked into the lobby, the community had just fin ished celebrating its Fall Festival, in which bed races were fea tured. Alpine Bank is the title sponsor of the festival, and the bank has a team that placed second in a sturdy bed built by Alpine's maintenance man. Branch Manager Tom Oliver, who, by the way, was the bed's passenger, is a great example of the future of our industry. He is currently in his second year of bank graduate school in Boulder. Alpine sends six or seven employees a year to banking school. The bank encourages its employees to be active in the com munity, andTom is on the Chamber board. "I like to be involved in what happens here," he said.
