Near Durant, Iowa, where Ron Hansen heads Liberty Trust & Savings Bank, a large truck stop just off Interstate 80 bought farmland near the inter change as a hedge against inflation and for potential expansion. The land, with strong development potential due to its location, went for a higher per acre price than is typical for the area: $1 1,000. Hansen says that farm land more typically has been going for $9,000 to 89,500 per acre, but even those figures reflect a significant increase in prices in east central Iowa. Farmland is in demand, more usually by farmers, according to Hansen. Not only sales, but rentals. Hansen notes that some landhold ers have auctioned lease contracts at strong prices.
