Last year, FDIC adopted a rule that required insured depository institutions to prepay three years of quarterly assessments by Dec. 30, 2009. In adopting the rule, the agency said that institutions may transfer unused FDIC credits among themselves. Banks that want to buy or sell prepaid FDIC assessment credits can now use an online marketplace. ABA contacted Promontory Interfinancial Network LLC to create the Prepaid Assessment Marketplace, a free, password-protected website that began operations on March 1. It matches banks that want to transfer prepaid credits.
