"Creative Destruction" is a punchy academic term that means about the same as "Out with the old; in with the new." The term was minted by Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter to convey the constructively brutal reality of entrepreneuring in the 20th century. That reality is painfully familiar to banking execs, who face the never-ending challenges of replacing legacy mainframes and upgrading software applications with the "next best things."
