It's not a revolution, exactly, but it is an evolution with some jagged spikes. One thing's for certain, paper is gradually getting squeezed out of the payments industry. "Check 'electronification' is the dominant trend and it has many aspects," notes Randy David, director of sales and marketing, for Dallas-based eGistics, Inc. These include the much-explored topic of image exchange (and submitting images directly to the Federal Reserve), as well as merchant and/or corporate alternative check handling processes with the percussive acronyms of POP, BOC, and ARC, standing for point-of-purchase, back-office conversion, and accounts receivable conversion, respectively. It also distantly relates to the increased use, by consumers, of various debit cards at the point-of-sale.
