Driving Sustained, Profitable Growth: Optimizing Strategic Planning, Compensation Strategy and Performance Measurement Resources for Success

"We want to be twice as big in five years." Grow or die—that's the mantra. Most banks are looking for growth and ROE between 15 and 20 percent. Not mere growth for growth's sake but sustained, profitable growth. We've found that banks that achieve sustained, profitable growth excel in three interdependent areas: strategic planning, compensation strategy and profitability measurement. And they don't try to do it alone. They utilize internal and external resources in these three areas to build an infrastructure of best practices—practices that motivate the people and drive the overall plan. First, a strategic plan builds the mission and vision unique to the bank. Secondly, an effective compensation strategy attracts, rewards and retains quality people. Finally, equipped with a profitability measurement system, these people manage profitability and are rewarded for their contribution to the bank's overall growth. All three areas are the basis for a successful implementation plan.
