In an attempt to maximize shareholder value, financial institutions frequently consider making acquisitions. In order to determine if an acquisition makes financial sense, the acquiring company needs to focus on five areas: 1) earnings per share, 2) asset quality and risk management, 3) balance sheet strength, 4) management and management's track record, and 5) franchise value.
