There must have been moments over the past 18 years when Alan Greenspan would rather have done anything but look at one more spreadsheet of macroeconomic data. Or times when he just wanted to shout, "There is no bubble!" instead of offering yet another carefully hedged answer to a congressman's question. After all, beneath that placid, scholarly mien, and beyond that stultifying delivery of economic erudition, beats the heart of human being.
