Located between Houston and Beaumont, about 38 miles from the coast, the city of Liberty, established in 1831, is older than the state of Texas itself. Two branches make up First Liberty National Bank, the main office in Liberty and the second office in Dayton, six miles away. Prior to the storm, the Dayton branch ran out of cash, but the main branch was able to aid customers as they fled the city. "We had a small run on the bank that morning but we were able to service customers," says David Castle, senior vicepresident of deposits. After Rita slammed into the Louisiana and Texas coasts, on Friday, Sept. 23, the city of Liberty, population 10,000, lost power and suffered severe wind damage. For weeks after the storm, more utility crews than residents resided in the town, repairing downed power lines and cutting up and moving massive trees that blocked city roads. The bank and most of the city was without power for over a week.
