Demand for labor increases as makers expand capacities and development spreads inland from the southern manufacturing hubs. When mainland China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, it rapidly became the "world's factory" due to ample low-cost land and labor, mostly migrant workers from inland villages. These days, capacity expansion among mainland manufacturers has resulted in a boom in demand for labor. In addition, while makers used to congregate mainly in Guangdong's Pearl River Delta cities, development is now spreading to other parts of the mainland. Fujian, Zhejiang and Shanghai are moving full steam ahead and more workers are needed to fully drive factories in these and other provinces.
