摘要

Deregulation of India's pulp and paper industry poses a dilemma for Thapar Group: The company needs a cadre of executives equipped to do battle in an increasingly competitive market at a time when it is cutting costs, and staff, to offset bottom-line pressure. So three years ago, executives at the paper, chemicals and electronics conglomerate identified close to 100 rising managerial stars and started scouting for Master of Business, Administration schools. U.S. Ivy League schools weren't only too expensive, but too far, and staffing constraints ruled out all options except a part-time degree. What's more, executives at the 20,000-employee concern worried that sending top managers away for full-time degrees would make them easy targets for poachers.
