摘要

With the U.S. showing signs of recovery, it is tempting to look for a synchronized economic rebound in Asia. Forget it: A U.S. rebound won't be the panacea for Asia's problems that some investors are betting. Despite globalization and talk of regional economic integration, Asia remains fractured, with huge inequalities in economic development even within individual economies. Japan, at one end, boasts per-capita annual income of $35,000. India's income per head is about $450, and Vietnam and North Korea are even poorer. Compare that with the European Union, where the $11,000 average income in its least affluent member, Portugal, is within striking distance of the $24,000 levels in Germany and the U.K. Vastly differing economies have very different needs.
