Hong Kong―Buoyed by efforts to make its telephone business more efficient, Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd. delivered stronger-than-expected results for 2001. The Hong Kong company, which in the past year has refocused its business away from unprofitable Internet ventures and toward the phone operations that provide 91% of its revenue, said it made a US$243 million net profit in 2001. That was a turnaround from the previous year, when the company reported a net loss of HK$129.3 billion (US$16.58 billion) because of its flagging Internet investments and costs related to its $28.5 billion takeover of Cable & Wireless PLC's Hong Kong phone utility in 2000. PCCW management attributed the performance to the company's back-to-basics approach, which has included a major debt-refinancing initiative, a 9% reduction in operating costs, and aggressive sales of its residential broadband Internet service, which executives said grew 43% to 400,000 subscribers last year and is now profitable. Overall revenue was up 6% last year, at $2.82 billion.
