Angus Coupland readily admits he isn't an Asian linguist. Yet his JF Eastern Smaller Companies fund has been able to trump all of its peers year-to-date with a return of nearly 25% as of April 12, a feat he attributes to his ability to "get to know" obseure Asian companies before other foreigners can get their foot in the door. The secret? An intelligence network "around the region that would give the Central Intelligence Agency pause. Mr. Coupland is "tipped off" by a house team of around 70 so-called country specialists and investment professionals, from the balmy Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur to the science parks of Taiwan and Korea. "That's the beauty of our structure," says Mr. Coupland, an Australian who studied economics and started working at JF Asset Management, part of the merged JP-Morgan Fleming Asset Management, five years ago. "Our country specialists can unearth companies in Korea, for example, and speak to them in their local tongue. They're on top of these companies far before any brokers or foreign fund managers."
